When my children were in elementary school, they received math and reading homework that had to be completed over the summer.
Usually, the math homework was about ten pages long depending on the grade they were going into.
Two of my children tended to wait until school almost started to do the math homework but my eldest, Matt, usually finished it with a day or two left of summer.
The summer reading list for Matt when he was going into third grade was quite long with about 30 books on the list.
They did not have to read every book, but the teacher hoped that each child would read a book every other week. That summer Matt was determined that we would read every book on the list.
Thankfully we had several of them and the library also had a bunch. We did have to purchase four of them but it was worth it.
The books covered a lot of different topics and some that I thought he would find boring, he actually really liked. It even made him want to read more books from that author.
My summer reading list this year also has a wide variety of different genres.
Some are novels, some are business books, and some I am not even sure how to describe.
Many of my friends are readers so we are always swapping books which makes it interesting and fun. I do tend to stay away from gory murder mysteries but other than that I try to keep an open mind about what I am reading.
I then like to discuss them with my friends.
What summer homework do you have planned?
I have other things on my list including finishing a book that I am writing with a colleague on women and leadership.
We started this project five years ago and we are determined not to get to Year Six!
I also am going to paint my younger son’s room.
I can’t procrastinate on this one because I have a deadline. Some of my relatives are coming from out of town in early September to celebrate my mother’s 90th birthday so I need a place for them to sleep.
I actually like to paint but would prefer to be outside at this time of year versus indoors so I am trying to do it on rainy days.
The issue with my summer homework (and maybe yours too) is that I am trying to stay accountable to myself.
Although I am working with a colleague and I want a nice room for my relatives to stay, I struggle with staying on task.
I also have other things on my list that I haven’t mentioned so when I think about all of it, I admit I get a bit overwhelmed.
My strategy now is to plan one thing to get done a day.
Some of it may be a part of something bigger or it may be something very small like scheduling a business appointment or doing the laundry.
Regardless I feel better at the end of the day because I moved forward even if it is just a little bit.
In other words, I am making progress. Maybe not as fast as I would like but I realize that it is okay.
Once the fall comes then it will be a different story, so I do want to enjoy all the warm weather before the leaves turn. Then I may need a new strategy!
